  四、IV. Reading Comprehension ( 60 points )

  Passage One

Thereare no inevitable outcomes of social class in child rearing. At the same time, there is no question that social class is important factor in how children areraised and the kind of adults that children become. Regarding social class, sociologists have found that parents socialize their children into thebehaviors and norms of their work worlds. Members of the working class areclosely super- vised and are expected to follow explicit rules at theirjobs. If they do not follow the precise rules and do as they are told, theywill not keep their jobs. Their experience influences how they deal with their children. As a result, their concern is less with their children′s motivations and morewith their children′s outward conformity. Thus they are more apt to usephysical punishment in managing their

children. On the other hand, middle-classparents, who are expected to take more initiative on the job, are moreconcerned that their children develop curiosity, self-expression, andself-control. They are also more likely to withdraw privileges or affectionthan to use physical punishment.

  Passage One

Crocodiles(鳄鱼) lay their eggs and leave them under leaves or sand. Baby crocodileshave special sharp teeth with which to break their way out of the shells.

Crocodiles only live where it is hot. They are found in India, Australia, Africa and America. They spend most of theirtime lying around in the mud or the rivers. The crocodile′s long powerful tail isused when the animal is swimming. It is also an excellent weapon, because itcan be swung with great speed and force. One blow will knock down a man or evena big animal at once. The crocodile it very well protected against its enemiesby the hard bony plates which cover most of its body, but because of the wayits neck is formed, it cannot turn its head from side to side and so it canonly see in front of itself. The crocodile has its teeth cleaned by thecrocodile bird. For its food this bird takes the bits left in the crocodile′smouth. Passage Four

Oceanography has been defined as"The application of all sciences to the study of the sea".

Before thenineteenth century scientists with an interest in the sea were few and farbetween.Certainly Newton considered some theoretical aspects of it in hiswritings, but he was reluctant to go to sea to further his work.

For most peoplethe sea was remote, and with the exception of early intercontinental travelersor others who earned a hying from the sea, there was little reason to ask manyquestions about it, let alone to ask what lay beneath the surface. The firsttime that the question "What is at the bottom of the oceans.′?" hadto be answered with any commercial consequence was when the laying of a telegraphcable from Europe to America was proposed. The engineer had to know the depthprofile( 起伏) of the route to estimate the length ofcable that had to be manufactured.

It was to Mauryof the US Navy that the Atlantic Telegraph Company turned ,in 1853,forinformation on this matter. In the 1840s, Maury had been responsible forencouraging voyages during which soundings(测水深)weretaken to investigate the depths of the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.Later, some of his findings aroused much popular interest in his book ThePhysical Geography of the Sea.

The cable was laid, but not until 1866 was the connection made permanent and reliable. At the earlyattempts, the cable failed and when it was taken out for repairs it was foundto be covered in living growths, a fact which defied contemporary scientificopinion that there was no life in the deeper

parts of the sea. Within a few yearsoceanography was under way. In 1872 Thomson led a scientific expedition (考察), which lasted for four years and brought home thousands of samplesfrom the sea.Their classification and analysis occupied scientists for yearsand led to a five-volume report, the last volume being published in 1895.
